Study and inspiration mainly of Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Bruegel The Elder's paintings.
Having felt that I had studied an adequate amount of graphite drawing for over three years to understand more about light, shadow and rendering the natural world efficiently with imaginative concepts in monochrome, I felt it was time to offer clients full color oil paintings as an option for commissions. In Summer of 2021 Creature Skateboards was the first to give me the chance. This painting started primarily (and selfishly) as a practice in color and brush handling and being my first attempt at completing an oil painting for any client, I needed to reassure myself that 'realism' wouldn't need to be playing a factor, but knowing what I now know - nature always plays a factor in any painting and it proved to be more difficult than I could have imagined. My thoughts were that if I could keep my first painting more imaginative and cartoony, I may be able to execute color mixing and study a little easier through the process rather than attempting painting from 'life' - I was VERY wrong because it turned out that inventing everything in color is far more difficult than painting what you see in nature.
What you see here is where I threw in the towel and after a lot of surprising and flattering requests, It's available in print form for you to own.
